The New Orleans Pelicans and guard Trey Murphy III have agreed to an extension that keeps the rising player in the fold for four more years.
Per multiple reports, Murphy and the Pelicans agreed to a four-year extension worth $112 million. Murphy, a draftee in 2021, had until 6 p.m. ET to sign rookie-scale contract extensions.
For Murphy, the extension may be a bit of a bright spot as he is recovering from a right hamstring strain suffered a week ago.
The injury occurred during the second practice of the Pelicans’ training camp in Nashville on Wednesday. Murphy’s recovery timeline makes it unlikely that he’ll play in New Orleans’ regular-season opener against Chicago on Oct. 23.
Earlier this offseason, the Pelicans signed fan favorite and defensive-minded guard Jose Alvarado to a two-year extension. The Pelicans have All-Star Zion Williamson, new guard Dejounte Murray and forward Herb Jones all under contract through at least 2026-27.
Guard CJ McCollum is under contract through 2025-26, while All-Star forward Brandon Ingram is eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer.
The 24-year-old Murphy, a 2021 first-round draft choice out of Virginia, averaged a career-high 14.8 points last season, when he played in 57 games with 23 starts.
He has shot 39.2% from 3-point range during his three seasons and also has shown a knack for slashing to the hoop for the kind of soaring, authoritative dunks that have gotten him a past invitation to the NBA All-Star weekend dunk contest.
